I seem to have very fussy chickens who throw the feed they don't like out of the feeder, which adds up to quite a substantial waste not to mention the continuous food for vermin. I use Jenko grain layer mash. I have tried the ground feed which is just the same. Has anyone experienced this and how did you fix it. I am thinking of just buying pellets (nothing to sort - all the same) but i have tried them with a small sample znd they won't eat it. Is it a matter of tough love and just give them pellets? Surely they will eat them if there is nothing else to eat.

Yes, that is what I did previously. I put out a dish every day, and what they left behind I soaked in water and added egg shell and oats which they literally fought over. But I built a PVC pipe feeder that holds 5 days of feed which I want to use when we go away. At the moment that supply only last just 3 days, the rest is on the ground. Once I finish this bag of feed I might try with just pellets and see how they go with that. Stuff 'em. After all they are just chickens. And you are right, if they had been my kids they would have had to eat what's on the table.

leave them without food for a couple of days Gabi  see what they will eat after that.  just kidding :)  Try putting just enough food there for them each day, rather than having a continuous supply.  After they eat all the stuff they like they may go back and eat the rest. Some chooks dont like sorgum
