fussy chickens

I seem to have very fussy chickens who throw the feed they don't like out of the feeder, which adds up to quite a substantial waste not to mention the continuous food for vermin. I use Jenko grain layer mash. I have tried the ground feed which is just the same. Has anyone experienced this and how did you fix it. I am thinking of just buying pellets (nothing to sort - all the same) but i have tried them with a small sample znd they won't eat it. Is it a matter of tough love and just give them… Continue

On the nose

Followed my nose in the garden the other day. I thought the neighbour's cat had made a deposit in my garden again. Would you believe that this was the culprit? It stinks worse than any cat poo you have ever smelled. It's a Lantern Stinkhorn and attracts flies which then spread the spores to other areas in the garden.…

Milk Kefir

I recently lost my milk kefir grains to a house/pet sitter who didn't know what they were, but thought it was off food in the fridge, so she threw them in the bin.

Does anyone have any spare milk kefir grains to get me started again?

Thanks

guerilla gardening

I am doing some guerilla gardening with a friend in my local park. Can anyone help with seeds or seedlings for fruit trees like custard apple, black sapote, avocado, pecan, cacao or any other interesting fruit tree. If you live near Algester and want to get involved please let me know.

Humic Acid

I am so excited. Yesterday I applied humic acid to my vegetable garden and lawns. You should see the lawn today, it's that green, it's off the chart. I am totally impressed about this supplement. Thanks Chris, for recommending it. I have purchased a large bag of the stuff, and I thought I could probably share this. So if anyone is interested to try this on their garden, I have filled 1kg bags which I am happy to on-sell. Please message me if you would like some and I will bring some along to…

Suit Up!!

Well, I learnt another lesson today. Using organic gardening methods is great for the environment, but doesn't mean at the same time that it is safe to humans. Used a Dipel Chilli spray this morning and got covered in the stuff by a wind gust. Ended up in Emergency with rash, numb mouth, tingling lips, difficulty swallowing and wheezy. Will have to wear a full hazmat suit next time LOL

poisonous plants

Major lesson learnt!!!

I will have to label all my plants. Tony and I were away for a month and had some friends look after the garden and told them to harvest whatever they wanted. May be I should have made a point of telling them not to harvest the comfrey. They got stuck right into it cooking it in stir fries thinking it was some kind of spinach. I hope they will be alright. I suggested they mention this to their GP next time and have a liver function test done.

Crop Swap at Carbrook

What a great day we had yesterday at the crop swap in Carbrook. Fantastic produce on offer and lots of taste testing. Never had Bunya nuts before, so thanks for the opportunity to taste all the different ways of preparing them. And thanks Norma, for your help with getting me on the right path with seedlings. Went home via Bunnings, got what I needed and planted a total new set of seeds in the afternoon :-) This is what makes belonging to a gardening club so valuable - being able to exchange…

:-(

Does anyone else still "suffer" from sluggishness as a result of the way too over the top Christmas holidays?  I just don't seem to be able to get back into it.

Before the end of the year I enjoyed getting into the veg patch. Since coming back from Syndey, I am struggling to get motivated. The heat has also not been kind to my little babies and I lost a whole worm farm (1000) due to lack of knowledge. I thought before going away, that I would top up the worm farm with plenty of scraps…

Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone. Just got back from Sydney and my garden survived (somewhat). Soaker hoses on a timer meant I didn't have to rely on someone else to come and water, but some areas missed out a little. Hopefully things come back in time for crop swap.

Duck Eggs

OMG!!!!!! I just had, for the first time in my life, scrambled eggs made with Wayne's duck eggs. thank you, thank you, thank you Wayne, for introducing me to such "culinary" delights. I can't believe the difference, extra body and flavour. I was a bit skeptical at first when I cracked the eggs open and the yolk wouldn't run like a normal chicken egg, more like half cooked yolk. I can't wait to get another dozen off you soon, if you can spare them :-)

Weeds

Stumbled across this today. What a great tool. I love my weeds and am trying to grow as many beneficial weeds as possible. Does anyone have a decent batch of radium weed? I would really like some in my garden.
