Our April Garden Visit will be at Colin Westwood's place in Logan Central in the afternoon.
Colin's place is a standard sized suburban house block that is full of interesting and productive food plants and sustainable lifestyle gadgets. This is how Colin describes his place:
My garden is designed to be a "Permaculture" style, minimum maintenance, environmentally sustainable, suburban jungle. The idea is to combine nitrogen fixing plants as both canopy and understory plantings with a wide range of perennial fruit and nut trees, shrubs and herbs. A methane bio-digester provides cooking gas and liquid fertilizer for the garden and native stingless bees ensure good pollination and a supply of honey, whilst preserving the species.
Solar hot water and electricity produce free energy as well as a substantial added income. Rainwater tanks, grey water diversion and composting make it possible to minimize expenses and recycle almost everything that comes onto the property.
Colin has an organic farming background and an extensive knowledge of subtropical fruit trees and alternative technologies, such as bio-digesters and biochar.
There will be a contribution box at the event.
A contribution of between $3 and $5 per person helps Logan Food Gardeners to cover its costs.
Kids and partners are welcome. Children must stay with you or you must be watching them at all times.
